Overview

The Fighting Hellfish is a gaming club in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to playing tabletop wargames with 28mm miniature toy soldiers.

The club plays Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40,000, and Blood Bowl by Games Workshop. And Warmachine and Hordes by Privateer Press. On occassion we mix in a little Zombies for good measure.

We normally play on Thursday nights with members showing up around 7pm. We are playing at the new Game Kastle location near San Jose Airport.

Recognition

The Fighting Hellfish are veterans of both Games Workshop and Privateer Press tournaments.

For Games Workshops, our members have played in Grand Tournaments in Seattle, Los Angleles, Chicago and Vancouver, as well as Rogue Trader Tournaments around California. We have won "Best Army Composition"; "Best Painted"; "Best Sportsmanship" and "Best General" awards so far. The club was in White Dwarf magazine after it ran an event at Games Day Los Angeles 2003.

For Privateer Press, our members regularly play in Steamroller events across the state and have brought home stacks and stacks of Champion and best factions prize coins.

History

Our gaming group has been around for over decade and originated at the defunct "A Place to Play" in San Jose, CA. In the late 1990's, we moved to Matchplay in Mountain View, CA. For a few years, the store was renamed Neutral Ground when it was affiliated with the Neutral Ground stores in Manhattan, NY and Atlanta, GA.

In 2002, we decided to get more official and named the club, the Fighting Hellfish. In 2003, our website was launched. Around this time, Neutral Ground Mountain View dissolved its partnership and reverted back to Matchplay. In April 2007, Matchplay closed down. The club is now playing temporarily at Game Kastle.

The name, "Fighting Hellfish," is inspired by an episode of The Simpsons featuring Grandpa "Sgt. Abe" Simpson in his WW2 days leading the Flying Hellfish to glory and grand larceny on the European front. That episode was in turn inspired by the 60's Marvel Comic Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos. A classic comicbook, a great cartoon... but most of all it's an excellent name for our club.
